00:01 < dranfi> Yes because of this : http://ipodlinux.org/Installation:_Winpod_without_datacorruption
00:01 < DerPapst> this is some kind of "trick"
00:02 < dranfi> What's the problem? The Kernel support FAT32,no? It is a problem of rights?
00:03 < DerPapst> because fat32 doesn'T allow soft links and hard links and other stuff the kernel needs to run from an ext partition. and this installation method uses an ext3 image that lives on the fat32 partition to accomplis that
00:04 * DerPapst left out some words and commas...
00:04 < DerPapst> but i hope you get what i wanted to say ;)
00:05 < dranfi> And HFS+ permit hard links, permissions ect ...
00:05 < DerPapst> yep
00:05 < DerPapst> and so does ext2 and ext3.
00:06 < dranfi> That's why it's possible to install IPL on MACPOD easilly
00:06 < DerPapst> yep
00:06 -!- BHSPitMonkey [n=stephen@unaffiliated/bhspitmonkey] has joined #iPodLinux
00:08 < dranfi> In this case the Image is one file or an index file?
00:09 < DerPapst> parts of the userland live in an file that contains an ext3 filesystem
00:09 < DerPapst> which is then loopmounted
00:10 * amiconn wonders what happened to umsdos
00:11 < DerPapst> iirc that was a very old filesystem wasn't it?
00:11 < amiconn> Google tells me that it should work up to kernel 2.4.x
00:12 < amiconn> (and there's even uvfat, using the lfn feature of vfat)
00:14 < dranfi> there is a 'good' news about the new version of parted : Even if it doesn't recognise my Ipod, it can now reseize HFS+ partitions :p
00:15 -!- DM| [n=dm@cpe-65-24-167-246.columbus.res.rr.com] has quit ["*bashes head against keyboard*"]
00:15 < DerPapst> heh... lack of maintenance and slower then ext ;)
00:15 < DerPapst> i guess that answers the question
00:15 * DerPapst never used parted
00:16 < amiconn> Would be a perfect match for ipl ;)
00:16 < amiconn> scnr
00:18 < DerPapst> heh.. true ;)
00:19 < dranfi> but on an Ipod 80 GB it says Erreur: /dev/sdb: unrecognised disk label
00:21 < DerPapst> what is it?
00:21 < dranfi> What? the error? It's when Parted try to access my Ipod
00:22 < DerPapst> ah ok
00:22 < DerPapst> i just wasn't sure what program you meant by 'it' :P
00:23 < dranfi> Parted say that the support of 2048 sized sectors is experimental.
00:24 < dranfi> Maybe you can find what's wrong in the Source code ans recompiling it.
00:29 < DerPapst> me? never :D i'm too stupid for that.. heh
00:44 < dranfi> And, do you know how to resolve my problem about MDP?
00:47 < DerPapst> it's probably running out of ram
00:48 < DerPapst> try to get rid of some modules
00:48 < DerPapst> like libstdcxx if you still have it and pthreadstubs
00:48 < DerPapst> and all the other you never use anyways
00:53 < dranfi> So you think it's a problem of RAM?
00:53 < dranfi> Is it better to load MPD from the rc or as a module?
00:59 < DerPapst> the module
01:00 < DerPapst> the version which requires editing the rc file is depreached
01:03 < rvvs89> deprecated?
01:03 < rvvs89> Also, hello
01:08 < dranfi> Thanks, that worked.
01:09 < dranfi> Thank you for everything you've done for me.
01:10 < dranfi> If I can help by testing modules, new kernel/bootloader ...
01:12 < DerPapst> rvvs89: morning :)
01:12 < DerPapst> yes. it's depreached. since the module takes care of that.
01:12 < rvvs89> deprecated*
01:12 < DerPapst> whatever :P
01:12 < rvvs89> meh
01:13 < rvvs89> this durr4456 guy is annoying
01:13 < rvvs89> "look it doesnt matter the music player is terrible just play your games without music"
01:14 < DerPapst> haha
01:14 < DerPapst> durr is cool
01:14 < rvvs89> Well durr
01:14 < rvvs89> Anyone who uses CAPS LOCK is on cruise control for cool
01:15 < rvvs89> I feel like giving him a warning for posting that
01:15 < DerPapst> heh
01:16 < DerPapst> max a half warning.. e.g. if you do that again you'll get a warning... wft
01:17 < rvvs89> It is insulting, lacks grammar, punctuation, and proper capitalisation, and most importantly, does not at all help with or answer the original question.
01:17 < rvvs89> MPD is awesome, on the desktop and on the iPod
01:18 < rvvs89> Meh, I'll just tell him off in the thread
01:18 < DerPapst> hehe... do what you think is best. i wouldn't complain whatever you do ;)
01:19 < rvvs89> Rgr that, heh
01:20 < DerPapst> meh i should go to bed...
01:21 < DerPapst> only 5h30 left for sleep D:
01:21 < rvvs89> D:
01:21 < rvvs89> You should go
01:21 < DerPapst> i'll do ;)
01:21 < DerPapst> see you in a couple of hours :)
01:21 < rvvs89> :P
01:22 < rvvs89> 'night

02:17 < travisslack> anyone know of a fix for 5.5g macpods that encounter kernel panics?
02:18 -!- fxb is now known as fxb__
02:18 < rvvs89> There are thousands of conditions that could trigger a kernel panic, what's the error message?
02:19 < travisslack> kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:03
02:19 < travisslack> 30GB
02:20 < travisslack> more specifically, "can not find resiserfs on ide0(3,3)"
02:20 < travisslack> it says FAT: bogus logical sector size.
02:21 < BleuLlama> so i'm guessing it's a macpod?
02:21 < travisslack> Yes.
02:22 < travisslack> my uneducated, unwise guess would be the kernel gets confused with the sector size of the ipod or something
02:23 < BleuLlama> pretty much. there's two things going on there; the loader and the kernel aren't working correctly with HFS ipods; I believe it's sector size, as well as the location of the root node of the HFS tree
02:24 < travisslack> ah. kind of what i figured. Is there an alpha kernel? Or should i just wait it out and check back later?
02:25 < BleuLlama> http://ipl.nonb.org/ticket/55
02:26 < BleuLlama> i'm not positive that a kernel fix is in yet
02:26 < travisslack> 3hey thanks a lot, i appreciate it anyway. ill bookmark that
02:27 < BleuLlama> that's the fix for the loader. the kernel needs a similar fix. i'm not sure that it's been done, or that my commentary is accurate
02:28 < travisslack> i have a loader2 fix i was given earlier.
02:29 < travisslack> Yeah I have that fix actually
02:29 < travisslack> Its the kernel one im trying to find

03:32 < rvvs89> linuxftw: What are you looking for?
03:34 < linuxftw> the official installer
03:34 < rvvs89> Right, well I would recommend you don't use it
03:35 < linuxftw> because since my linux is being wierd and not allowing me to view the patcher, so im go9ing to try and install ipodlinux through the installewr
03:35 < linuxftw> it's my only option atm..
03:35 < linuxftw> at the moment
03:35 < BleuLlama> if you have linux, we recommend you do the Manual_Installation
03:35 < rvvs89> What do you mean "view the patcher"
03:35 < linuxftw> i can't download the patcher tho
03:35 < linuxftw> it's encrypted page for me
03:35 < rvvs89> I wasn't aware rockbox was using any encryption on their web site
03:35 < linuxftw> i click download link and it trasnfers me to a wierd encrypted page
03:35 < rvvs89> At least, on the public parts
03:36 < linuxftw> i'm sure it's not
03:36 < linuxftw> it might be my ubuntu
03:37 < rvvs89> That wouldn't make any sense
03:37 < rvvs89> Which browser are you using?
03:37 < BleuLlama> right-click the links -> save as
03:37 < linuxftw> im jusing firefox
03:37 < BleuLlama> which you've been told a few times already
03:37 < linuxftw> and umm i get "save link as"
03:37 < linuxftw> but not save as
03:38 < rvvs89> So use save link as
03:38 < BleuLlama> whick bannedguy told you to do about a half hour ago
03:38 < BleuLlama> which*
03:38 < linuxftw> it dodm
03:38 < linuxftw> didn;t do much
03:39 < rvvs89> Ok, then right click on it and choose copy link location

03:39 < rvvs89> Then type
03:39 < rvvs89> curl -O
03:39 < rvvs89> and paste the link after that
03:39 < BleuLlama> if you can't save a link from firefox, i don't recommend you install ipodlinux
03:39 < rvvs89> He has a point there
03:40 < rvvs89> I believe what your seeing is your system not properly understanding the mime type of the file, which really doesn't make sense given that it's just application/octet-stream
03:41 < bannedguy> back
03:41 < bannedguy> sry I was gone
03:41 < bannedguy> have to wash my hands
03:44 < linuxftw> should i hop on my windows xp?
03:46 < linuxftw> mmm... the curlo -O http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/ipod/ipodpatcher/linux32x86/ipodpatcher worked where was it saved D:
03:47 < rvvs89> Probably in $HOME
03:48 < rvvs89> Unless you changed directory
03:48 < linuxftw> doubt it..
03:48 < linuxftw> ill check

14:12 < Drgb> In general, you want to make your Linux partition as big as you can without making the firmware one too small; generally the best results are achieved by splitting it roughly in half. Guidelines for specific iPod's follow:
14:12 < Drgb> * For an iPod with a 33-cylinder firmware partition (all 1G and 2G iPod's and most 3Gs), try shrinking it to 10 cylinders and creating the Linux partition from 11 to 33.
