01:46 < Paps> Fuck!
01:47 < Paps> Some songs I can add to my iPod nano after installing iPodlinux
01:47 < Paps> (first generation)
01:47 < Paps> but i drag some and it doesn't really cop
01:47 < Paps> *copy
01:47 < philroboman> using itunes?
01:47 < Paps> yes
01:47 < philroboman> or linux
01:47 -!- HellDragon [n=Nocebo@unaffiliated/helldragon] has joined #ipodlinux
01:47 < philroboman> ?
01:47 < philroboman> ok
01:47 < Paps> windows
01:48 < philroboman> do you always eject your ipod?
01:48 < Paps> yes
01:48 < philroboman> hmm
01:49 < philroboman> do you use podzilla0 or podzilla2?
01:49 < Paps> 2
01:50 < philroboman> i assume you have it on manually move music over, is it not showing up on your ipod or is it not playing?
01:51 < Paps> in itunes
01:51 < Paps> some songs copy
01:51 < Paps> most don't at all
01:51 < Paps> space is not the issue
01:51 < Paps> i have 20-something
01:51 < Paps> it used to be 500-something before i decided to use ipodlinux
01:52 < philroboman> 20-something what?
01:52 < Paps> songs
01:53 < philroboman> on the ipod?
01:53 < Paps> yes
01:53 < Paps> almost 3000 on the computer
01:53 < Paps> not set to auto sync with itunes
01:53 < philroboman> so they were deleted when you installed ipodlinux?
01:53 < Paps> yeah
01:53 < Paps> i updated the firmware first
01:53 < Paps> then installed ipodlinux
01:55 < philroboman> i suggest starting from scratch, and restoring your ipod, then try a different installer to add ipodlinux.
01:55 < philroboman> that way your music will work at least
01:55 < Paps> so i should restore my ipod then add music or install ipodlinux first?
01:56 < philroboman> it shouldn't matter, but put your music back on first
01:56 < Paps> okk
01:56 < Paps> now how do i restore my ipod in itunes 6
01:57 < philroboman> in start... all programs... there should be one that says ipod
01:57 < philroboman> i would recommend getting 7
01:57 < Paps> fuck no.
01:57 < Paps> 7 takes forever.
01:57 < philroboman> ?
01:57 < philroboman> dial up?
01:57 < Paps> istupid album artwork
01:58 < Paps> and the gapless playback thing
01:58 < philroboman> works great on my machine
01:58 < Paps> it takes an hour for it to finish loading 3000 songs.
01:58 < Paps> mine's 2.8GHz 1GB RAM
01:58 < philroboman> so i take it you've tried?
01:58 < Paps> yes
01:59 < philroboman> btw it only does that once
01:59 < Paps> yea
01:59 < philroboman> after that no slow loading
02:00 < philroboman> http://miche.aqua-gero.com/nano/ this is the installer i use, works but you have to manually put a different bootloader on it
02:00 < philroboman> unles you like the << to load linux
02:00 < Paps> oh
02:00 < Paps> thanks for your help
02:00 < Paps> i'll be going now
02:00 < Paps> peace.

02:10 -!- screwt8 [i=ariel@gateway/tor/x-b54b56aecb068cc2] has joined #ipodlinux
02:10 < will> Sorry, not me
02:10 < will> You wouldn't happen to know anything about device drivers, would you?
02:11 < philroboman> not much if any
02:11 < will> I wish serial would work on the 4g
02:11 < will> Is anyone still developing?
02:11 < philroboman> a few people
02:11 < philroboman> i'm trying to start
02:11 < will> I'd like to help, but I don't know who to contact
02:12 < philroboman> no one really, i gat all my stuff from the wiki pages
02:12 < will> Isn't there any coordination?
02:12 < philroboman> not that i'm aware
02:13 < will> What are you hoping to develo
02:13 < will> p
02:14 < philroboman> in the end im going to try and clean up the kernel a bit, and hopefully get the usb up as a host, if that's possible, and write a better gui
02:15 < philroboman> perhaps get the peizo working in podzilla
02:16 < will> well I would be interested in helping with some of the kernel work
02:16 < will> I'd have to learn a few things as I go, but I have experience with C
02:16 < philroboman> i'm just starting and really terrible at coding, so we'll be learning together
02:16 < philroboman> have you compiled a working kernel yet?
02:17 < philroboman> i got the old one to compile but not the new one
02:18 < will> I haven't started yet
02:19 < philroboman> ok
02:19 < philroboman> if you do decide to get started i'll help where i can
02:20 < will> Sounds like a plan
02:21 < philroboman> what time zone are you in?
02:21 < will> central us
02:22 < philroboman> ok, i'm in est, so only an hour
02:23 < will> Serial on the 4g is my first big priority
02:23 < philroboman> ok
02:23 < will> which gen are you using?
02:23 < philroboman> i have a nano, and have limited acces to a 4g
02:23 < philroboman> so i can work on it wen i have it
02:24 < will> Alright, I should probably start by installing the loader and such
02:24 < philroboman> are you using linux?, or what?
02:24 < will> What type of experience do you have?
02:25 < will> dual boot ubuntu/xp
02:27 < philroboman> i have done some c here and there, and my nano works good, i've compiled the kernel and i've helped some of the people work out issues. i haven't done any low level stuff, but this is the project i hope to learn in, i have SuSE and XP on my machine, so i won't know as much c as you but i'll keep up
02:28 < will> oh I'm not THAT experienced
02:29 < will> but this should be a nice starting project
02:29 < philroboman> it should,
02:29 < philroboman> where do you want to start?
02:29 < will> might as well start at the heart
02:30 < will> what do you think
02:31 < philroboman> id say so, that's where i am, putting some time into getting a modded kenel to compile
02:31 < will> 2.4 or 2.6
02:31 < philroboman> 2.4.34
02:31 < will> why not work on 2.6?
02:31 < philroboman> as opposed to the old 2.4.24
02:31 -!- syamajala3 [n=syamajal@c-75-68-225-205.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] has quit ["Get MacIrssi - http://www.g1m0.se/macirssi/"]
02:32 < will> the "experimental" kernel
02:32 < philroboman> i don't know if the patches work on 2.6
02:32 < will> ah, that's a good point
02:33 < philroboman> how do you feel about using minix source instead of uclinix partches?
02:34 < will> i haven't looked into it. what are the benefits?
02:35 < philroboman> i think that it might be easier to compile but i don't hink anyone has tried, we would have to mod in all the drivers including ttk and hotdog, but it would be unique, and may work better(i don't know if it runs better on an ARM proc of not) but it's a thought
02:37 < will> hmm
02:38 < will> is it even ported to ARM?
02:38 < philroboman> i'm checking now
02:38 < will> doesn't look like it
02:39 < will> currently limited to x86
02:39 < will> with Xscale and PPC on the way
02:39 < philroboman> ok
02:39 < philroboman> we'll do uclinix then
02:40 < philroboman> it'll be easier to get help that way anyways
02:40 < will> yeah
02:41 < will> ok, easier to install loader2 from windows or nix?
02:41 < philroboman> um, i'd say linux,
02:42 < philroboman> cause you have to hunt down one of the apps for windows
02:43 < will> alrighty
02:43 < will> have you looked through any of the kernel source?
02:43 < philroboman> some of it
02:43 < will> hardware.c?
02:44 < philroboman> no, not yet
02:44 < will> it's an interesting one
02:44 < will> specifies a lot of ipod specific hardware details
02:46 < philroboman> um, which folder is it in?

03:43 < D|sToRt|oN> vista blows
03:43 < will> and i don't have any programs installed because i usually use ubuntu

04:00 < will> i get the error folder
04:00 < will> i did this:
04:00 < will> copied the existing firmware, extracted the apple_os, made the new firmware, wrote it back to the device, reset the ipod
04:02 < philroboman> hmm
04:03 < will> is it normal for the orig_firmware to be about 41MB
04:04 < philroboman> dd if=/dev/diskX skip=252 count=30000 of=orig_firmware.bin

15:36 < RvX> hello
15:37 < RvX> how long does it take to you to put the Apple's firmware to your iPod via dd if=blabla of=/dev/sdx seek=63 ?
15:38 < RvX> I have 3g 20 GB
15:39 < DerPapst> depends on the file size and whether you're using usb 1.X or 2.0 or firewire
15:39 < RvX> firewire, about 4 MB
15:39 < DerPapst> max a minute
15:39 < RvX> :O
15:40 < DerPapst> how long do you already wait?
15:40 < RvX> it is clicking for over 10 minutes
15:40 < DerPapst> oh
15:40 < RvX> what should I do? to abort it?
15:41 < DerPapst> are you installing the bootloader?
15:41 < RvX> nope
15:41 < DerPapst> what are you dd'ing to your ipod?
15:41 < RvX> I bought used HDD
15:42 < RvX> and I want to check if everything is ok with iPod
15:42 < DerPapst> is the partitionlayout correct?
15:43 < RvX> hmmm...
15:43 < DerPapst> so you have put a new hdd into the 3G iPod?
15:43 < RvX> yes, but the hdd is used ;)
15:44 < DerPapst> have you restored it with itunes or did any other things to it?
15:44 < RvX> http://ipodlinux.org/Restore_without_iTunes#Partition_Tables
15:44 < DerPapst> k
15:44 < RvX> I can't run iTunes via wine
15:44 < DerPapst> ok
15:44 < DerPapst> so you have done the fdisk parts already?
15:45 < RvX> from this link: I have set 1st, Empty partition: 1st: 1st cylinder, last: 10 cylinder
15:45 < RvX> fat32: first: 11 cylinder, last 19073 cylinder
15:46 < DerPapst> errm... you better use blocks
15:46 < DerPapst> and try to use block 1 to 5 as raw partition
15:47 < DerPapst> similar to the partitiontable from my 40GB 3G iPod.
15:47 < DerPapst> s/block/cluster
15:49 < RvX> I didn't get it, sorry. :(
15:49 < RvX> how do I use block 1 to 5 as raw partition in fdisk?
15:50 < DerPapst> http://ipodlinux.org/Restore_without_iTunes#Restore_the_MBR <-- as i've explained it here.
15:51 < RvX> do I have to abort process I have been running till now?
15:51 < RvX> (dd)
15:52 < DerPapst> Last cylinder or +size or +sizeM or +sizeK (1-33, default 33): do enter 5 here
15:52 < RvX> ok
15:52 < DerPapst> i think yes.
15:53 < D|sToRt|oN> how do i get my ipod to been seen in a VMWARE other linux OS ?
15:53 < RvX> ooh, it says 4162560 bytes (4.2 MB) copied, 1885.4 s, 2.2 kB/s
15:53 < DerPapst> heh
15:54 < DerPapst> well then test it before messing again with fdisk
15:54 < RvX> folder with !
15:54 < RvX> bad
15:55 < DerPapst> hmm..
15:56 < RvX> so, from the beginning..
15:57 < RvX> The nnumber of cylinders for this disk is set to 19073
15:57 < RvX> (form fdsik)
15:57 < RvX> fdisk*
15:57 < RvX> I delete all (2) partitions
15:58 < RvX> done
15:58 < RvX> I create new, primary partition: first cylinder 1, last 5
15:58 < DerPapst> yupp
15:58 < RvX> right?
15:59 < RvX> ok
16:00 < RvX> setting all as previously.. are these 2 partition to be active?
16:00 < RvX> or only 1st, with Empty type has to be?
16:01 < DerPapst> i think only one has to be active..
16:02 < DerPapst> and type ß
16:02 < DerPapst> *0
16:02 < RvX> yes, already done
16:02 < DerPapst> partition 2 has to be fat32 which means type b
16:02 < RvX> 1st is 5104 blocks, Id:0, System:Empty
16:02 < RvX> yes, I have done it also
16:03 < RvX> does 1st one look ok?
16:03 < DerPapst> wait a sec...
16:03 < RvX> ok
16:04 < DerPapst> it has to be 40131 blocks i think.
16:04 < RvX> well, if it stars on 1st cylinder and ends on 5th, it is 5104
16:05 < DerPapst> odd...
16:05 * DerPapst searches his 2nd 3G iPod
16:05 < RvX> (but I have 19073 cylinders)
16:06 < DerPapst> maybe a mistake in the partitiontable then...
16:06 < DerPapst> but cylinder 1 to 5 should be ok
16:07 < RvX> hum, so should I write this table?
16:07 < DerPapst> how does it look now?
16:08 < DerPapst> pastebin.ca should be good
16:08 < RvX> xterm doesn't do copy and paste, I think :(
16:09 < DerPapst> you're using something else than fdisk?
16:09 < RvX> oh, I have cfdisk also
16:09 < DerPapst> no no fdisk is fine
16:09 < DerPapst> i just wondered what xterm is..
16:10 < RvX> it is terminal
16:10 < DerPapst> and it doesn't support copy&paste?
16:10 -!- Tom-Turbo [n=tom@catv-129-019.tbwil.ch] has quit [Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer)]
16:10 < DerPapst> that's odd
16:10 < DerPapst> ^^
16:11 < RvX> got it :)
16:11 < DerPapst> btw.. you are loged in as root? or at least using sudo ...
16:11 < DerPapst> nice :)
16:11 < RvX> yep, I'm on root account
16:12 < DerPapst> k
16:13 < RvX> http://pastebin.ca/632089
16:15 < DerPapst> errmm.. there is something else that's not ok
16:15 < DerPapst> your fdisk uses another unit
16:17 < DerPapst> dunno how to change it though
16:18 < DerPapst> the firmaree partition has to be ~5MB
16:18 < RvX> last time it was 10.49 MB
16:19 < RvX> 1 cylinder is about 1 MB
16:19 < RvX> at my disk
16:20 < DerPapst> well then it should be ok...
16:21 < DerPapst> infact i think your partitiontable should look exactly like the one of the 4G 20GB one on that page
16:21 * DerPapst is pretty sure he misses something.
16:27 < RvX> I have nothing to loose. Formatting...
16:29 < DerPapst> heh
16:34 < RvX> I don't know why dd command takes soooooo looong to finish. :(
16:35 < RvX> I have iPod connected to Firewire card via dock
16:36 < DerPapst> don't know either
16:36 < RvX> as you have seen, the transfter was 2.2 kB/s :|
16:37 < DerPapst> heh
16:39 < RvX> almost 34 minutes to copy firmware at that rate
16:39 < DerPapst> it never took me that long.
16:40 < DerPapst> are you sure the harddrive is ok?
16:40 < RvX> but as to the hard drive, formatting process took 1 minute
16:40 < RvX> I am not sure if HDD is ok
16:41 < RvX> I have tested it before everything and it printed: "READ FAIL"
16:41 < DerPapst> in diagnostic mode?
16:41 < RvX> yes
16:44 < RvX> Exactly it was: "HDD FAIL; 0X00000070; READ FAIL"
16:44 < DerPapst> sounds not so good eh?
16:44 < RvX> unfortunately..
16:45 < DerPapst> but still somehow i still don't like your partition layout.
16:45 < DerPapst> does the hdd make strange noises?
16:47 < RvX> when it starts - no, now it do something similar to the floppy while reading from diskette
16:47 < RvX> tic-tac tic-tac
16:48 < RvX> it does*
16:48 < DerPapst> hmmm...
16:49 < RvX> have you been ever testing your iPod's HDD with external software?
16:49 < DerPapst> try to create a really big firmware partition. e.g. 1/2 firmware and 1/2 fat32
16:49 < D|sToRt|oN> is there any way to get my ipod to bee seen in a Guest OS called PClinuxOS 2007 running in VMWARE ?
16:49 < DerPapst> to make sure it's not because the firmware partition is too small
16:50 < RvX> but so far, I have to wait for dd process to finish
16:51 < RvX> about 13 minutes to go
16:51 < DerPapst> k... i don't know if ipodpatcher sees your ipod if it doesn't contain the apple copyright.
16:51 < DerPapst> otherwise you can try ipodpatcher as well
16:51 < DerPapst> how is your exact dd command?
16:52 < D|sToRt|oN> Ipodinstaller2 will not work with a 5.5g 30gb for future reference
16:52 < RvX> dd if=/home/rvx/Desktop/iPod_2.2.3/Firmware-2.2.3 of=/dev/sdb1
16:52 < DerPapst> k...
16:52 < DerPapst> looks correct
16:53 < DerPapst> and if you do ... of=/dev/sdb seek=63 ?
16:53 < D|sToRt|oN> any one know how to install modules in Ipodlinux such as "File browser" ?
16:54 < D|sToRt|oN> sorry to interupt your convo .....
16:54 < RvX> it did it last time, but it will probably take the same time to finish
16:54 < DerPapst> you could try ipodpatcher next time though.
16:55 < DerPapst> D|sToRt|oN: it's documented on the wiki. modules go to /usr/lib on the ext partition
16:57 < D|sToRt|oN> im trying to get my ipod to be seen in Linux ..... i have windows atm ive installed PClinuxOS in Vmware but i know nothing of linux so once im in linux im lost
16:58 < D|sToRt|oN> modules go to /usr/lib on the ext partition <----- for example im lost with this instruction now if it was C:/usr/lib i would know
16:58 < DerPapst> heh
16:58 < DerPapst> i for example know nothing about VMs
16:58 < DerPapst> s/VMs/vmware
16:59 < DerPapst> so i can't tell you if your ipod is recognized by PClinux or not.
16:59 < DerPapst> infact i don't even know this linux distribution
17:00 < D|sToRt|oN> so when i boot in to linux i put that in terminal and press enter ill restart this Computer and run a live distro if u tell me what to do once im in linux ill write it down tell me just how to access the ipod , with out vmware
17:00 < DerPapst> you can check if it detects the ipod in vmware first though
17:01 < D|sToRt|oN> how
17:01 < DerPapst> open the terminal
17:01 < DerPapst> and connect your ipod
17:03 < RvX> and type: ls /dev
17:03 < D|sToRt|oN> ok \
17:04 < D|sToRt|oN> it detected it
17:04 < D|sToRt|oN> new medium 32mb removeable device
17:05 < D|sToRt|oN> i can brows the drive
17:05 < D|sToRt|oN> dame i wonder why i wouldnt work last nite
17:06 < RvX> DerPapst: it finished writing
17:07 < DerPapst> D|sToRt|oN: and where is it mounted?
17:08 < D|sToRt|oN> modules go to /usr/lib on the ext partition
17:08 < D|sToRt|oN> ops
17:08 < D|sToRt|oN> dame
17:08 < D|sToRt|oN> sec
17:09 < D|sToRt|oN> system:media/sdb3
17:09 < DerPapst> k
17:10 < DerPapst> so that should be already the linux files... correct?

17:13 < setuid> I guess this doesn't work on anything but 5G ipods
17:14 < DerPapst> RvX: make sure first that the firmware partition isn't too small
17:14 < D|sToRt|oN> it will work on every thing except a 5.5g i thought
17:14 < D|sToRt|oN> setuid
17:14 < DerPapst> e.g. use half the disk size as firmware partition and the other half as fat32 partition
17:14 < D|sToRt|oN> can u search for songs on your Ipod ?
17:14 < RvX> ouch, ipodpatcher isn't even going to execute here :(
17:15 < RvX> so, I'll do it with fdisk
17:15 < DerPapst> D|sToRt|oN: yes. you drag and drop the modules foldrs in there
17:16 < setuid> I blow away the iPod on Windows, using the iTunes "Restore" utility
17:16 < DerPapst> ipodpatcher is only for installing the bootloader and copying the fromware on your ipod.

17:16 < RvX> DerPapst: ok

21:09 < DrBack> Hello. I have iPod nano 1st gen. I have tried the windows installer (installer 2) but i get an error while installing, saying that it has trouble downloading "kernel"-something and "YYMMDD"-something. The error-boxes during installation gives me oppertunity to press quit, but if i don't do, it will still finish and say the install was successfull. BUT: My iPod fails to boot in linux, the apple boot is ok. Any suggestions ?
21:11 < DerPapst> yes
21:11 < DerPapst> use the netless installer
21:11 < DerPapst> we have currently server problems
21:11 < DerPapst> so a few downloads aren't working
21:11 < DrBack> ok.
21:12 < DerPapst> e.g. the kernel, pz2 and a few others
21:12 < DrBack> netless installer ? i'll find it on the page, right ?
21:12 < DerPapst> yes.
21:12 < DrBack> what i really want to is to play videos on my ipod, and then i have to install the linux os first right ?
21:12 < D|sToRt|oN> yo derpapst im gonna try Fedora Core6 for what we was trying to do ..
21:12 < DerPapst> either iPodLinux or RockBox
21:13 < DrBack> what do you recommend, whats the easiest to use and install ?
21:13 < DrBack> (if you can recommend)
21:13 < DerPapst> easiest to install is rockbox
21:13 < DerPapst> and it supports mpeg 1 and 2
21:13 < DrBack> ok,
21:13 < DerPapst> iPL has it's own video format.
21:13 < DrBack> ok,
21:14 < DrBack> then i think i will try rockbox.
21:14 < DrBack> also to find on the web ipodlinux.org ?
21:14 < DerPapst> but the drawback of rockbox' mpegplayer is that it can't seek yet.
21:14 < DerPapst> nope.
21:14 < DerPapst> rockbox.org
21:14 < DrBack> hmm, but it can pause , right ?
21:15 < DerPapst> dunno. but i guess yes.
21:15 < DerPapst> i don't have a target where it runs smooth enough
21:15 < DerPapst> so i have never used it.
21:15 < DrBack> ok.
21:15 < DerPapst> i only have a 3G and 5.5G iPod.
21:15 < DrBack> oki
21:15 < DrBack> i'll thank you for your advice, i'll try rockbox
21:15 < DrBack> :)
21:16 < DerPapst> 3G -> b&w and 5.5G has a too large screen :P
21:16 < D|sToRt|oN> derpapst what Ipodlinux installer did you use for your 5.5g may be i should use the same one
21:16 < DrBack> hehe.
21:16 < DerPapst> but afaik it runs pretty nice on nanos because of their small screen
21:17 < DerPapst> D|sToRt|oN: i've installed iPl manually.
21:17 < D|sToRt|oN> oh
21:17 < D|sToRt|oN> so u did it all from scrach
21:17 < DerPapst> jupp.
21:17 < DerPapst> it isn't that hard though
21:19 < D|sToRt|oN> u think it be easier for u to help if i made remote desktop connection in linux and let u have control ?
21:20 < DerPapst> heh...
21:20 < DerPapst> it would be at least faster i guess
